Specialist (re)insurance broker Miller has opened Miller Malaysia under a Labuan licence, adding treaty and facultative reinsurance to its Asia portfolio. The move follows earlier entries into Japan, South Korea and an expanded Singapore presence, and is aimed at deepening relationships with Malaysian cedents and attracting regional talent to an alternative hub.

Richard Broad, APAC head of treaty reinsurance, said the new Malaysian operation will help the broker scale businesses in territories where it already operates. In South Korea, Miller built a specialist business in under two years focused on marine, affinity, cyber and P&C, and plans to extend into additional specialty markets and retail and reinsurance channels. In Japan, a small but fast-growing non-marine retail unit supports its marine business, with ambitions to grow its reinsurance footprint.

Broad highlighted that the growth of the Asia-Pacific region and reinsurersโ€™ global diversification strategies are increasing capacity across most lines of business. He noted a rise in managing general agents (MGAs) that intensifies competition, prompting the development of new reinsurance products to address complex, evolving risks. While the region has largely avoided major catastrophe losses, recent floods in Thailand and earthquakes in Japan underscore the need for robust catastrophe pricing.

The broker expects solid reinsurer results, strong market capital levels and continued competition to sustain a buyer-friendly market for the upcoming 1.1 renewal season. Clients are using competitive conditions to enhance protections, redeploy savings into additional programs, layers or multi-year solutions, creating a positive opportunity for the market. Broad said most clients seek to maximise value from reinsurance spend without compromising protection, positioning them for growth and product innovation.

Millerโ€™s selective expansion strategy, now including Malaysia, reflects its aim to mirror specialist capabilities from London across Asia, offering a broader suite of reinsurance solutions to meet regional demand.

Why it matters

The expansion gives insurers in Asia access to more diversified reinsurance options and competitive pricing, supporting better risk management.
