Indian equities are entering November following a period of market weakness marked by foreign investor outflows, rupee depreciation, elevated crude oil prices, and global uncertainty. As the Nifty 50 faces these challenges, market analysts are examining historical data from the past 25 years to determine if the index might see a year-end recovery.

Data analyzed by SAMCO Research indicates that November and December have historically been strong months for the Nifty 50. Between 2001 and 2025, the index delivered average returns of 2.5% in November and 2.6% in December. Specifically, the Nifty 50 ended November in positive territory in 15 out of 25 years, while December recorded gains in 17 of those years.

Jahol Prajapati, an Equity Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities, noted that Diwali, falling on November 8 this year, could extend festive activity, potentially supporting consumption sentiment and market liquidity. Prajapati suggested that year-end portfolio rebalancing and institutional positioning may also provide support. However, he cautioned that a sustained recovery depends on improvements in corporate earnings, stabilized global cues, and a return of foreign investor participation.

Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, provided a breakdown of performance over the past 20 years. The Nifty 50 closed November in positive territory in 10 instances with an average gain of 4.94%, while declining in the other 10 years by an average of 3.22%.

Broader market segments have shown varying results. The Bank Nifty ended November higher in 14 of the past 20 years, averaging a 6.45% return. The Nifty Midcap index posted gains in 15 of the past 20 Novembers, averaging a 4.57% return. The Nifty Smallcap index saw positive returns in 14 of the past 20 years, averaging a 4.68% gain, though it also experienced steeper average declines of 8.54% in years where it fell.

Sectorally, Private Banks, PSU Banks, Financial Services, and IT have historically been among the strongest performers in November. Conversely, Oil & Gas, CPSE, Metals, Auto, and Pharma have generally underperformed the broader market during the same period.

While historical seasonality suggests a potential for year-end gains, investors should weigh these patterns against current macroeconomic headwinds, as past performance does not guarantee future results.

Why it matters

Understanding historical seasonal trends in the Nifty 50 can help investors contextualize current market volatility against long-term performance patterns as they approach year-end portfolio adjustments.
