Reliance Industries (RIL) surged 11.6% on Monday, November 2, marking its biggest single-day rally in six years and propelling its Margin Trading Facility (MTF) exposure to ₹4,711 crore, a 60% increase from ₹2,937 crore at the end of October. This jump placed RIL at the top of the NSE’s MTF book, displacing HDFC Bank, which had held the position for several months.

The overall MTF book stood at ₹1.45 lakh crore, with the top ten stocks accounting for ₹19,442 crore of exposure. RIL alone contributed 24% of the exposure among these ten stocks after the Monday surge. The stock also led trading turnover in the Nifty 500, exceeding ₹11,000 crore on Monday and staying above ₹5,000 crore on Tuesday, while delivery-based buying hit nearly ₹3,000 crore on Tuesday after more than ₹6,000 crore on Monday.

RIL reported a consolidated profit after tax of ₹29,550 crore for Q2 FY27, a 33.8% year-on-year rise, with profit attributable to owners up 40% YoY to ₹25,548 crore. Revenue grew 27.8% YoY to ₹3,62,268 crore and EBITDA reached a record ₹62,409 crore, up 23.9%. The Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) segment drove earnings, posting a 67.9% YoY EBITDA increase to ₹25,203 crore and a 44.2% revenue rise to ₹2,31,601 crore.

Analysts highlighted the technical breakout and volume surge. Apurva Sheth of SAMCO Securities noted the stock broke a prolonged downward trendline, suggesting a shift from selling pressure to fresh buying interest. Gaurav Garg of Lemonn recommended holding existing positions and waiting for a decisive breakout above ₹1,250-₹1,252 before adding fresh buying, citing key support zones at ₹1,215-₹1,220 and potential upside toward ₹1,278-₹1,280.

Motilal Oswal maintained a ‘buy’ rating with a revised target price of ₹1,520, estimating a ~54% hold-co discount on its 64.5% stake in Jio Platforms and emphasizing the energy segment’s earnings upgrade as a near-term catalyst.

Why it matters

The surge positions Reliance as a dominant force in margin trading and could influence broader market sentiment and portfolio strategies.
